Renovation in the Local Community -
Our Sri Lanka renovation program can be based at a wide range of community facilities in and around the city of Galle. You could be helping out at schools in rural areas, government hospitals, children’s homes, community centers, elder's homes, or Buddhist temples. These institutions often struggle to find funding and labour support to undertake important development work.
You do not need to have any previous construction or renovation experience, just bags of energy and the willingness to help. Ideally this project will gain perfect renovation experience, skills for internship students and any one happy to extend hands on DIY and for school volunteer groups & group volunteers.
Your renovation volunteer program will mainly be during the morning, however, depending on the circumstances and weather conditions, timings may change. The renovation aspect of the programme in Sri Lanka allows participants to provide a tangible impact within the volunteer experience as they make an important contribution within the local community. With your help, we can further support our community and you can do your bit to leave a lasting impression!
In addition we support less fortunate families to put up own homes (for those having temporary houses), partly constructed homes to complete up to possible living status, contructing western toilets, building kitchens, making sewerage pits, building water tanks, providing electgricity, painting and decor etc.
Within our close approximate community, we find so many poor families with partly built homes and no financial support to complete the homes for safe living standards. Some have partly fixed roofs, some have no doors & windows, some need wall rendering, some have no cement floor and living on clay floors. We will be happy to support those homes to make the remaining work with possible help, like fixing the roofs with safety, fix door & window frames and offer security/privacy with doors and windows, walls to complete properly with paint, provide cement floor as basic and possible tiles depending on financial availability
Most above-mentioned homes do not have proper sanitary / toilets and use a temporary covered area in the garden as a toilet. At rainy times & nights they are impossible to use. Also, the children never learn to use proper western toilets and they often get humiliated in public places. Same with sh0wer places. Most such toilet pits are not sealed, and we can build them perfectly to support. We reckon building a cement toilet equipped with western facilities also with a hygienic sewerage pit is essential and would make a huge difference to these families.
Similarly, houses do not have a kitchen place but use a small area inside the home itself for cooking purpose. There have been lot many occasions adults & children have faced critical burn injuries due to unprotective cooking/fireplace in their houses and support them with a purposely built kitchen could make a big impact to their lives.
You can build water tanks for houses and financially support to get running water supply to their toilets, showers, kitchen etc. This is such a basic need, but many do not have such privilege due to poverty.
There are homes without electricity and no electrical wiring installed. It is something we can support helping with wiring, receive electricity supply offering another basic human need. You will be surprised to hear that children use road lamps to do their homework, schoolwork etc and at lowest standards use homemade kerosine oil lamps for a lighting.
Fundraise for these works will also be fun and rewarding prior to you come and we are willing to share our help with budgets.
The exact project location for thees works will be decided closer to the time of the program where the need for a local project will be identified. Essentially, volunteers will be placed at one local establishment that has expressed a great need for volunteers and request help in renovation or restoration work. This will ensure the impact we are making on the renovation project will be valuable and needed. A coordinator will be at hand to help you with your tasks. As a renovation volunteer, you will spend your time helping out with the required tasks that the project desires. For example, you may be busy mixing paint, digging holes, painting fences / walls, assisting builders, scrubbing walls, moving blocks, decorating a room, whatever is required for your local community. Your placement is likely to be outside, so make sure to bring plenty of suncream, a water bottle, and old clothes too, old deck shoes!
We gurantee you this is a great project that allows you to get hands-on within the community and make plenty of clutural education. By the end of your time with us, you’ll be able to see exactly what you’ve contributed towards, whilst still making a difference in the community.
