Discover the journey that shaped Volunteer Sri Lanka into a beacon of hope and transformation

The 'VSL' History

Galle is an idyllic tropical seaside town, located on the south-western coast of Sri Lanka – the ‘PEARL’ of the Indian Ocean. Galle is one of the many towns in Sri Lanka that was devastated by the Tsunami in December 2004. In total, Sri Lanka lost more than 45,000 lives to the tsunami and a staggering 2.5 million additional people were displaced. ‘VSL’ the Volunteer Sri Lanka was founded by Janaka De Silva, who lost both his parents in the disaster. Despite losing his parents to the Sri Lanka tsunami, Janaka De Silva finds hope in a “Volunteer Sri Lanka” project that places volunteers to different projects so they can make a difference.

Janaka De Silva - Founder

The Founder

Born in Galle, Janaka has four children with his wife Manel and is a Tourism & hospitality Consultant having worked and experienced in several leading tourists' hotels in Sri Lanka. He faced tsunami while working as General Manager of famous Unawatuna beach resort and was lucky to survive. He often survives on only a few hours sleep a night and operates VSL, Janaka is no stranger to work hard; at the young age of 12, he began cooking pastries and cakes after school to help support his family. Janaka, designed VSL to offer volunteers a true grassroots experience where volunteers are placed into existing community projects and experience village life. He explains, “VSL provides an opportunity for volunteers to open up their belief in their own potential”. At the start of “VSL” project in 2010, Janaka’s enthusiasm motivates the volunteers with which he shares his home with and not at a hotel. Later the “VSL” volunteer house came in to accommodate volunteers as the growing up of his children needed their own space. The Volunteer house is just adjacent to Janaka’s home; therefore, the volunteers have the privilege of enjoying local family living experience.

The Inspiration

Before the tsunami Janaka and his wife were in the process if extending the family home to accommodate Janaka’s ageing parents. However, in December 2004, the tsunami took both his parents and left their long-term dream of building a community library unfulfilled. Providing assistance to others immediately after the tsunami inspired him to continue to help the residents of his village; on the first anniversary of the tsunami, Janaka’s parents dream was realized with the opening of the “tsunami Memorial Library” founding the library was a collaborative effort with the community. The village temple Buddhist monks offered their premises to house the library. Only four weeks after the tsunami, he had assisted 110 children in returning to school and 25 families in restarting their small businesses making well use of money his parents left where he says the initial thoughts of his inspiring idea to have “Volunteer Sri Lanka”.
